Step 2 · Task

Your task: design the cafeteria of your dreams

Work in a team of 3 or 4. At the end, you will have three things to show the principal.

Follow these 6 steps

Do the steps in order. Tick the boxes when you finish. Ask your teacher if you need help!

1. Make your team

   Sit with your team. Choose a team name and a role for each person (look at the roles in the Task tab).

2. Learn the words

   These words and phrases will help you. Read them and say them aloud with your team.

3. Choose your digital tool

   Your team chooses one tool to make the design. Open the card, read the mini tutorial and click the button to start.

   Stay safe online

   Use your class code or your school account. Never share your password, your surname or your photo.

   Canva for Education Floor plan

   Canva is easy and colourful. You can draw a floor plan with pictures of tables, chairs and food.

   Mini tutorial

   1. Log in with your school account.
   2. Click Create a design and choose Whiteboard (or a blank page).
   3. Click Elements on the left. Search for words like table, chair, pizza or plant.
   4. Click a picture to add it. Drag it to move it. Use the round corners to make it bigger or smaller.
   5. Click Text and write labels, for example "the food counter".
   6. Your design saves by itself. Write the name of your file in the top bar.

   Tip: look at your design from above, like a bird. Tables go in the middle, the counter goes against a wall.

   Tinkercad 3D model

   Tinkercad builds 3D models with simple shapes. A box can be a table. A cylinder can be a stool.

   Mini tutorial

   1. Click the button. Type the class code from your teacher and choose your nickname.
   2. Click Create new design.
   3. Drag a Box to the blue grid. Use the small white squares to change its size. This is your first table!
   4. Drag a Cylinder for a stool. Click a shape and choose a colour in the box that opens.
   5. Copy a shape with Ctrl + C and Ctrl + V. Now you have two tables!
   6. Use the black arrow on top of a shape to lift it, and the curved arrows to turn it.

   Tip: build the floor first (a big flat box), then the furniture on top.

   Roomstyler 3D room

   Roomstyler is a room planner. You draw the room and add furniture from a list.

   Mini tutorial

   1. Open the website.I can help you to log-in in the next class.
   2. Start a new room and draw the walls. Make it a big room!
   3. Open the furniture list. Choose tables, chairs, lamps and plants.
   4. Drag each thing into the room. Turn it with the arrows.
   5. Change the colour of the walls and the floor.

   The buttons can change a little. If you can't find one, ask your teacher.

4. Build the cafeteria

   The Architect builds. The team gives ideas! Use English: "Let's put the tables here."

   • 5 or more pieces of furniture
   • A food counter
   • 2 decorations (plant, lamp, poster...)
   • Colours I like
   • Words in English on my design

5. Write your menu and your sentences

   The Chef chooses 5 things for the menu. You can use these starters:

   • In our cafeteria, you can eat ___ and drink ___.
   • I like ___ but I don't like ___.
   • The ___ is next to the ___.
   • There are ___ chairs under the ___.

   • Our menu has 5 things.
   • We have 4 sentences.

6. Practise and present

   Practise your 2-minute talk. Everybody speaks! Show your design on the screen and say your sentences.

   • Everybody in the team speaks.
   • We show our design.
   • We look at the Evaluation tab before we finish.

Step 4 · Evaluation

How will you know you did a great job?

Read each row. Choose the box that is true for you. Your teacher will use the same rubric.

Congratulations, Design Team!

You did an amazing job! The principal says: "Thank you! Our new cafeteria will be fantastic!" You learned new words, you used a digital tool and you worked as a team.
